This term, pupils from across our Trust came together to celebrate reading through our inaugural Year 6/7 Transition Reading Competition.
The competition encouraged pupils to read and respond to three outstanding contemporary children’s novels:
- Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell
- Birdie by J.P. Rose
- High-Rise Mystery by Sharna Jackson
As pupils explored these fantastic texts, they shared thoughtful book reviews and cast their votes for their favourite title. Following votes from schools across the Trust, Birdie by J.P. Rose was announced as the CAM Book of 2026.
The standard of entries was exceptional, making the judging process both challenging and rewarding. Congratulations to the winners of our book review awards:
- Best individual book review (primary): pupils from Bourn and Offord
- Best individual book review (secondary): a pupil from Melbourn
- Best overall book reviews: Spaldwick (primary) and St Peter’s (secondary)
To mark the end of the competition, pupils, staff and guests gathered at Cambourne Library for a special celebration event. With refreshments provided and Trustees and Local Advisory Board members in attendance, the afternoon showcased the enthusiasm and creativity of our young readers while recognising their achievements.
We were also delighted to welcome award-winning author Dr Ashley Hickson-Lovence as our guest speaker. Dr Hickson-Lovence inspired pupils with his engaging talk, encouraging them to see reading as a gateway to imagination, opportunity and personal growth. His visit sparked lively book discussions and left many pupils eager to discover their next great read.
The competition has been a wonderful example of the power of reading to connect pupils across our Trust, supporting a smooth transition from primary to secondary school while building a shared reading community. We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part and look forward to seeing this competition continue to grow in the years ahead.
